What is paddle surfing?

It’s a sport where you stand on a surfboard and use a paddle to navigate the waves. You can take a SUP course to learn the ropes, but certain safety rules will ensure you have an even better time.

How to paddle surf safely

First, respect the basic rules of surfing—there’s an unspoken etiquette in the water. For example:

  • Paddle outside the surf zone and breaking waves to avoid collisions.
  • Never cut off a surfer riding a wave.
  • Ensure your equipment is certified and in top condition.
  • Follow right-of-way rules, just like on the road.

For Stand Up Paddle (SUP) specifically, the rules are:

  • You must know how to swim (non-negotiable).
  • Avoid beginner sessions in crowded surf spots. Once you’ve mastered the basics (gear, techniques, sea conditions), you can join—but stay hyper-aware.
  • Check your leash before heading out. Whether it’s your gear or a rental, a loose board is a hazard.

  • Mind your paddle—keep hold of it and learn recovery techniques.
  • Once you’re confident, consider extra precautions: bring a waterproof phone case, monitor weather conditions, never go alone, wear sunscreen, and use a proper wetsuit.

It’s an exhilarating sport, but a bit of caution ensures maximum enjoyment.
