For several years now, it’s common to spot someone in the distance surfing with the aid of a paddle. Yes, this sport is known as Stand Up Paddle (SUP), or Paddle Surfing, and it became popular in Hawaii around seven years ago.

A Bit of History

Although it only gained popularity in the last five years, this sport originated on the beaches of Waikiki around 1960, when instructors used this stance to observe and photograph tourists who were learning to surf.

This upright position gave them a better view of the groups. A few decades later, in the early 21st century, more experienced surfers began using this variation of the water adventure sport as a training method when waves were scarce or not high enough.

And this is perhaps the biggest advantage of Stand Up Paddle—it doesn’t require waves and, therefore, doesn’t even need the sea (though that’s where it’s most practised). It can be done on rivers, lakes, reservoirs, etc. Another benefit is its learning curve, which is much shorter than traditional surfing, making it accessible to a wider audience who can also experience its thrills more quickly.

Why Is It the Trendiest Sport?

  • First and foremost, as mentioned earlier, it can be practised on any water surface—sea, rivers, lakes, or reservoirs.
  • It’s a highly enjoyable sport that tones many parts of the body, including the legs, abdomen, upper back, arms, etc., while also burning plenty of calories as an aerobic activity. As you can see, it’s a very well-rounded sport!
  • It’s affordable. You can rent a board from as little as €9. Here, we’ll leave you with all the companies in the country so you can take a look.
  • It’s easy for everyone and requires no extraordinary skill, so both children and adults can enjoy a fun ride. Falls will be frequent at first, but you’ll soon get the hang of it.

The correct stance on the board is with your feet aligned with your shoulders and your torso tall and upright. You’ll propel yourself with your whole body (not just your arms). Relying solely on arm strength is the first mistake to avoid.
Paddle Surfing is a fantastic way to improve fitness, as it offers various options: circuits, relaxing crossings, etc. It’s also an excellent way to explore your surroundings, as your position lets you observe both the surface and the water’s depths.

One variation that’s also gaining popularity lately is River SUP. As the name suggests, river descents with whitewater are the highlight of this style. Will you manage to stay on your feet? Here’s a comprehensive post about this variation.
