Canoeing is perhaps the area's flagship adventure sport, thanks to the spectacular high-volume rivers that cross Asturias before flowing into the Cantabrian Sea.
You can enjoy different options, here are some examples.
By canoe you can discover, for example, inaccessible places along the River Navia. In summer these excursions are flatwater routes, while in winter it's tributaries like the Agüeira or Ibias that interest us. They're paradise for experts in whitewater descents. These rivers remain largely unknown, with many more still to be explored.
The problem is that canoeists with plastic boats in Asturias are few and far between. Except for the people of Llanes with their kayak surfing, we only find the occasional group here and there dedicated to high-difficulty river descents, where the Galician Massif ends and the Picos de Europa begin.
Other adventure sports
Regarding rafting, it was banned in Asturias for several years until 2010 when it was permitted again to enjoy this thrilling adventure sport.
Alternatively, there are mountain routes if you prefer to hang up your canoe one day and opt for hiking. There are routes for all levels and you can go walking any time of year.
Mountain biking is another option to explore the area through forest tracks. So even out of the water, adventure is guaranteed.

Gastronomy
One detail we can't forget: in Asturias they eat very well. You can enjoy everything from the classic Asturian fabada stew to cider pork chops or sirloin with Cabrales cheese. The local cheeses are internationally renowned - don't miss trying them. And of course, whatever you eat, always accompany it with properly poured cider.
