"Deeply grateful and moved" were the words of the man who has been a cornerstone of the Candás-based club during its half-century of existence. Thanks to Prendes, the team has risen to become one of the top teams in Spanish canoeing, having won the title of Spanish Champion more than 20 times.
Among the accolades of Club Los Gorilas, it has been repeatedly chosen as the Best Canoeing Club in Asturias and Spain. Even the International Olympic Committee recognised the achievements of the club from the town of Candás, bestowing upon it the title of "Town of Olympians".

The award granted by the CSD (Spanish Sports Council) acknowledges the over 50 years that Armando Prendes has dedicated to the team since its founding in 1960. Following their induction into the Royal Order of Sporting Merit—the most prestigious distinction they have received to date—celebrations will continue to mark the club's half-century milestone.
The Secretary of State for Sport announced that both Prendes and the club have been granted this honour "in recognition of their sporting merits". The club founder reflected on the work carried out over the years: "This is the reward for fifty years of dedication and effort, during which both I and every member of the club have given our all."
The European Canoeing Championship will take place next July, and spectators can enjoy the International Descent of the Sella, where the president of Club Los Gorilas will serve as the event's herald. Additionally, Candás will host a reception for delegations from 45 countries participating in the European Championship.
