Discover incredible landscapes

Fancy tackling the Sella Descent?

The Sella is a 56km-long river, offering plenty of water to explore. Naturally you won't do it all in one go - or would you like to try? It originates in the Picos de Europa and flows into the Cantabrian Sea.

What does the Sella offer? Some of the most breathtaking Asturian landscapes you'll find. Your route will depend on which canoeing company you choose, as there are several navigable stretches.

If you're experienced in this sport, don't miss the annual competition: the International Sella River Descent held every August between Arriondas and Ribadesella over 20 kilometres. Any paddler can participate - both Spanish and international - with the sole requirement of holding a competition licence.

Which categories can participate? The event is open to both men and women in senior, junior and veteran categories for K2, K1, C2 and C1. However, the stretch between Arriondas Bridge and Ribadesella Bridge (15km) is open to cadets, centenarians, mixed crews and RR-type boats (whitewater kayaks without rudders).

Do you dare to descend the Sella?

Who organises the event? Naturally, the Spanish Canoe Federation, with delegation to the Asturian Canoe Federation. To compete, you'll need to contact the International Sella River Descent Organising Committee (P.O. Box 14, 33540 Arriondas - Asturias). Registration depends on the current year - we recommend calling or emailing them to speed up administrative procedures.

If you're just starting out, here are three suggestions to begin this exciting sport before attempting the Sella Descent:
