Deal overview
Trekking in the first National Park in Spain! The Cornión Massif or Western Picos de Europa is the largest national park in the area, and has a great variety of landscapes with lush lands of pastoral plains, arid areas of limestone rock and incredible lakes like Covadonga.
In this 5-day activity, we will travel a distance of 62 km. in total. Every day a different route through this mountain massif including 4 nights of accommodation in the local shelters, on a half-board basis with breakfast and dinner.
This is the program we have organized:
- Day 1: meeting point at the Buferrera Parking, in the Covadonga Lakes, and from here we will ascend about 14 km. until reaching the Vegarredonda Shelter to spend the night. Along the way we will see emblematic places such as the Pozo del Alemán, and if conditions allow we will go to the Mirador de Ordinales, where one of the first climbers of this mountain was buried: Pedro Pidal.
- Day 2: after breakfast, we will take a 15 km route. along the most characteristic routes of the Massif that go from north to south. We will be able to see chamois, one of the typical animals of the area, and we will reach Vega Huerta where we will be able to see mountains of maximum height. We will descend until we reach the Vegabaño shelter to rest.
- Day 3: we will go to the town of Caín on a progressive descent crossing forests, sheepfolds and villages in the valley surrounding the Cornión Massif. We will visit the Mirador del Tombo in Cordiñanes or the Chorco de los lobos and we will finish at the hostel in the town of Caín.
- Day 4: from Caín we will go to the Cares gorge, through bridges and tunnels until beginning an ascent of more than 1000m. of unevenness along the Trea Canal. We will go to the Vega de Ario refuge to spend the night, but if the weather is favorable we will ascend Picu Jultayu.
- Day 5: We will descend 7km. from the refuge to the Covadonga Lakes again, passing through the Vega de Belbín. At the lakes we will have a well-deserved beer and then this magnificent trip will be over.
In the shelters you can buy picnics for each day, and they have blankets so you only need to bring bags of sheets or thins.
