THE 5 BEST HIKING ROUTES IN ASTURIAS

1. Cares Route - Jaw-dropping gorges!

Who hasn't heard of the Cares Route? One of the most famous trails in the Principality and indeed in all of Spain. It winds through the Cares River gorge amidst the majestic Picos de Europa. What many don't know is that it starts in Asturias and ends in León - specifically beginning in Poncebos and finishing in Caín.

This linear route takes about 3-4 hours to complete its 12 km length. You can continue to Posada de Valdeón, adding 9.5 km to your journey. The spectacular scenery will leave you speechless. Welcome to the Mecca of hiking in Asturias.

2. Bear's Path - An old railway line!

The railway route! The Bear's Path follows the track of an old coal train that ran from Santa Marina (Quirós) to Trubia (since 1884). A later branch was built to Teverga, completed in 1902.  Nothing remains now except the path it once followed.

Today it's become the most popular greenway in the principality - and for good reason! Perfect for cycling enthusiasts too, as it's in excellent condition. A spectacular green landscape bursting with vegetation and breathtaking views for a dream route, whether solo or with friends and family.

3. Las Xanas Gorge - You might spot a fairy!

Many consider this a mini Cares Route. At just over 3 km long and much less crowded, some find it even more beautiful. This trail was carved into the rock as part of an abandoned project to connect local villages.

The "fairies" gorge (hence its name) is a rugged yet simple family-friendly path that many consider prettier than its bigger sister. The only way to find out is to visit!

4. Covadonga Lakes - The Holy Cave!

A circular route of about 6 km through the Picos de Europa National Park. Specifically in the council of Cangas de Onís, this easy trail showcases some of the principality's most beautiful landscapes. Key points include the three glacial lakes and the Covadonga Sanctuary

Lake Enol, Bricial Lagoon (only visible certain days of the year), and Lake Ercina form the highlights of this family-friendly route. We warn you about its spectacular nature - don't hesitate to include it if you're visiting the area.

5. Pría Blowholes - Spitting at the sky!

Our final entry: Pría Blowholes (Llames de Pría). Heard of them? We're moving to the principality's wildest coastline.
If you don't know what a blowhole is (no, not medieval court jesters), here's the explanation:
Blowholes are rock formations where seawater shoots up under pressure - a spectacular sensory experience. ¡Check out the video!

This area contains the PR-AS 57 route, a circular trail of about 14 km starting at Llames de Pría and reaching Cuevas del Mar beach. Mostly flat, you'll enjoy dramatic cliffs and the water curtains created by the blowholes.
