While not very common, it's worth writing an article on this topic. Many of us go to the mountains for a day or weekend, whether for tourism or combined with adventure activities like hiking, canyoning, or rock climbing.

Electrical storm in the mountains

Naturally, we'll check the weather forecast for those days outdoors (these days you can do so with near certainty several days in advance), but even so, developing storms can still surprise us. That's why it's crucial to follow these tips we're sharing in case you encounter this phenomenon. It's also worth checking out these general mountain safety tips.

 Clouds approaching

That said, storms move quickly, so take necessary precautions if you hear thunder or see lightning.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE CAUGHT IN A MOUNTAIN STORM?

1.  Warning signs

If you see dark clouds approaching your position, sound the alarm. Your body will automatically react to an approaching storm, particularly to lightning. Clear signs that one is approaching include:

- Your hair will stand on end
- You'll feel a tingling sensation in your body
- Any metal objects in your backpack will buzz

When these warning signs appear, here's what you should never do:

2. Don't run

Stay calm! Instinctively, we all run when faced with danger, but in this case, it's the worst thing you can do during a storm. Wet clothing attracts lightning due to the turbulence we create in the air.

3. Don't shelter under an isolated tree

If you must take shelter under a tree, only do so if it's among other trees and isn't the tallest one, as an isolated tree acts as a lightning rod.

4. Remove all metal items and avoid approaching them

Everyone knows metal is a good conductor of electricity. That's precisely why you need to place all your metal objects a safe distance away from you. It's also important to stay away from metal structures like fences, pipelines, electricity pylons, wire fences, railways, machinery, etc.

5. Avoid open areas

A storm might catch you in an open area like a meadow, plain, or farmland. If you have no other option, assume the safety position. To prevent ground lightning strikes, stand on an insulating material like a backpack or coat in a fetal position with feet together and knees hugged. If you're in a group, do the same but stay about 20 metres apart.

6. Find shelter

 Shelter for the storm

As a last resort to avoid all the previously mentioned measures, find shelter. If you have time and resources, seek safe shelter like cars (with windows closed), a stone shelter, a cable car station, or anything that isolates you from the storm. Also consider a rock overhang or cave, provided there's at least one metre between your head and the ceiling. These are the world's best mountain shelters.

That said, I hope no one ever needs these tips, but better safe than sorry - they'll be here when you need them.
