Traversing mountains is something humans have done since the dawn of time—first because it was their habitat, and later because they sought to reconnect with the ways of their ancestors, interacting with nature.

In the mountains, you’ll find countless opportunities for adventure sports—and why not, for self-discovery. Hiking is an activity that lets you explore natural landscapes at a relaxed pace, listening to the sounds of nature and discovering flora and fauna you might never have encountered before.

Discover the Lagoon

The Sierra de Gredos is one of the most suitable areas in our geography for this activity, offering formations of all kinds and trails that adapt seamlessly to your experience level. It’s also a perfect place to explore with family or friends on a Sunday outing.

Mountains and plains adorn the Gredos massif, allowing you to enjoy an unparalleled geological and biological heritage. One of the most popular hikes is to the Circo de Gredos and the Cinco Lagunas, located in the northern part of the region. You can also immerse yourself in geographical features like gorges, ravines, moraines, cliffs... and even peaks reaching 3,000 metres in altitude.

Stretching over 100 kilometres in length, the range extends from San Martín de Valdeiglesias to the Béjar region, meaning the possibilities for a hiking excursion here are endless. All you need to do is decide who’ll join you and pick the right moment to let your imagination soar as you venture into the most spectacular landscapes in the heart of the country.

 Ibex, a spectacular species

The vegetation is incredibly diverse, thanks to the steep slopes and varying orientations of the mountainsides. As for wildlife, over two hundred species inhabit these areas—such as the Iberian ibex, griffon vulture, otter, and golden eagle, to name just a few.

Here are some key recommendations to consider before starting your hiking route:

  • Respect the local flora and fauna, and avoid leaving litter outside designated bins.
  • Camp or light fires only in authorised areas.
  • Vehicles are not permitted off-road or outside designated paths.
  • Always carry a mobile phone.
  • Research your planned route thoroughly, including weather conditions and emergency contact numbers.
  • And of course, bring appropriate gear: comfortable clothing and footwear, warm layers, and protection from sun and rain.
