Archery North Yorkshire 9 prices and offers 2026

Archery is an ancient discipline that forms a key part of the national story of the British Isles, and it was in North Yorkshire, over 150 years ago, that the first competitive events as a recreational sport were held. Become part of that heritage by organising an experience on one of an ample number of ranges.

On offer in this county you’ll find traditional bow and arrow shooting, as the famous longbowman of the English army used in the middle ages, as well as more new wave target sport experiences incorporating crossbows, axes and games. Though once a dangerous activity to be involved in, this sport is now open to everybody and requires concentration, patience and precision, not just strength. Keep reading to find the perfect option for you, at a price that might surprise you.

Where are the places to do archery in North Yorkshire?

• Rufforth: Four miles West of the historic city of York we’ve got a target sports experience for you that will exceed your wildest expectations. There’s classic bow and arrow shooting with the latest recurve design bows, and fun games like balloon popping and naughts and crosses to keep you entertained throughout the session. For something more unusual you can go to the purpose built crossbow range and experience launching bolts at top speed and hitting the bullseye. Finally, for the most unique activity, release your inner viking and try axe-throwing. Safety is a top concern, allowing you to go for it in a way that definitely shouldn’t be tried at home. All sessions in Rufforth are based on explanation and demonstration from experienced instructors, before you put their tips into practice in a competitive, interactive way.

• Bedale: In Bedale, the Camp Hill Estate near Kirklington offers luxury glamping for a comfortable outdoor retreat and a full programme of outdoor activities for families. Children as young as 8 can take part in sessions here, and it’s a great activity to train your kids’ aim and focus.

• Harrogate: Ripley Castle sits to the North of Harrogate, and it’s the perfect place to live the mediaeval experience. You couldn’t ask for better surroundings as the range is next to the beautiful lake. The bowmasters will instruct you on correct technique as well as safety with your designated bow, and give you the chance to try a crossbow too. The experience culminates in taking aim at Sue’s head - don’t worry, Sue is the resident mannequin of the castle!

• Reeth: Set above the River Swale in the midst of the wild moors and hills of the county, Reeth is a place to let your imagination run wild. Will you be Robin Hood or Legolas as you hone your aim on the target? In Reeth you’ll use top of the range equipment - lightweight aluminium bows and arrows - on an Olympic-style range. Groups of any size are welcome so this is a great choice for a birthday, corporate event, or children’s outing.

• Richmond: For those who want a varied shooting experience, here you can find a package experience including traditional bows, crossbows and air rifles. The trained instructors can give you the best advice on how to improve your aim with each of them. Airsoft experiences, a team game in which players use guns that fire lightweight plastic projectiles, are also on offer.

• Skipton: the small, welcoming club based at Coniston Hotel in Skipton, offers an experience to beginners who might be thinking about taking up the sport, or who are looking for an interesting activity, as well as experienced archers who want to try shooting in the beautiful county scenery. High-velocity bows, tried and tested training techniques and some friendly competition come together to make this a fantastic experience.

• Huby: this small village in the Hambleton region has a sheltered 15m range which is the perfect place to work on your marksmanship. A wide range of ages and abilities are welcome here, and discounts are available for group bookings so it’s a good option for stag or hen parties, or family get-togethers. Pack a picnic and enjoy it in the designated picnic area before or after the shoot.

• Tadcaster: set amongst peaceful fields, Tadcaster is a great location for this sport. Book an experience here and you can enjoy shooting at a variety of different targets - from traditional to more outside-the-box. You can also combine bow and arrow shooting with another target sport, such as axe-throwing or air rifle shooting, or with a quad bike ride through the countryside.

Requirements to do this activity

The minimum age for an archer depends on the bow, so the equipment that a range has will determine the minimum age. The ranges at Reeth and Huby cater to children as young as 7, while at the other end of the scale Rufforth has kit that will allow sharpshooting for all of those who are 12 or older.

Unlike ancient bows, carved from a single piece of English oak or yew, the modern bows that you’ll find here have adjustable handles and limbs, offering different poundage, or resistance. This means that you don’t need to be a bodybuilder in order to draw back the bowstring, you just need to work with your instructor to get the right bow for you. Then it’s all about your control and accuracy as you aim at the target and hit the bullseye.

How long does an experience last?

- A standard length for a beginner’s archery session in North Yorkshire is one hour. This will give you time to get used to the equipment, and to enjoy some games and competition with your friends or family - without your arm getting too tired! More experienced shooters can find 3 hour or half day sessions to further develop their skills and try a variety of shooting styles or lengths.

- The centre in Reeth also runs official Archery GB courses. These 3-day programmes cover the basics from posture and phases of shooting, to range layout, learning styles and equipment - everything you need to deliver lessons yourself. That’s right, this course will qualify to teach to beginners all around the UK. To a passion into a project with a course.
