A thrilling way to enjoy the cold winter is by practising winter sports, where you can release adrenaline and take in breathtaking views at high speed as you glide down mountain slopes. One activity we highly recommend is riding a snowmobile.
To drive one, however, you must hold the relevant licences; otherwise, you won’t be able to take the wheel and will have to settle for being the "passenger" at the back. That said, the experience is still incredibly enjoyable, so it shouldn’t stop you from giving it a go.
What will riding a snowmobile give you? Speed, adrenaline, the thrill of navigating winding curves, skidding, accelerating on long straights, climbing uphill, descending... It’s one of the best ways to reach otherwise inaccessible places. The same goes for off-road vehicles, which can traverse the most unexpected terrains with no obstacles in their way.
More and more ski resorts are seeing adventurers enjoying snowmobile rides, as winter sports companies increasingly include them in their activity programmes.
Do you need experience to ride a snowmobile?
While it may seem easy, there are some considerations to keep in mind—overconfidence is not advised. Remember, you’re handling a vehicle on an icy surface, so you must take extra precautions. Some snowmobiles can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h or even more, depending on their engine size and power.
When planning a snowmobile excursion, it’s advisable to wear comfortable and suitable clothing for the snow. Ideally, you should dress warmly with fleece layers, scarves, and a hat. Don’t forget—it’ll be cold during the activity! Also, wear specialised footwear to keep your feet dry, and since the sun will be out, remember to protect yourself with sunscreen and goggles.
What type of snowmobile should I choose?
You’ll find different types of snowmobiles on the market, each with specific features tailored to different needs. Choose the one that best suits you:
- Utility snowmobiles. These come with a rear cargo rack to carry everything you need for a moderately long trip. You can also bring your skis or snowshoes in case you want to make a stop along the way.
- Performance snowmobiles. Designed for racing, these are aerodynamic and built for long distances as well as high speeds.

- Touring snowmobiles. If you’re a beginner, this model is ideal for you, as it’s perfect for relaxed rides in nature without any fuss.
- Luxury snowmobiles. Unlike the others, these feature the finest details. Why? Remember, it’s still a vehicle, and as such, it can come in various high-end models tailored to the most demanding customers.
Now that you know the different types of snowmobiles available, all that’s left is to choose yours. Are you going to miss out?
