Caving has its origins in 20th-century France, but gradually spread across the entire European continent, gaining significant traction in Spain. What equipment do I need?

Personal Equipment

  • Clothing: choose attire suited to the temperature of the cavity you'll explore. It's best to visit a specialist sports retailer, as everyday clothing won't suffice.
  • Overalls: these should be waterproof to prevent moisture or water from seeping in and making you cold.
  • Gloves: essential for hand protection – one of the body's most vulnerable areas.
  • Boots: depending on whether the cavity is wet or dry, you'll need either rubber boots or mountain boots.

Technical Equipment

  • Harness: choose one offering maximum comfort and safety. A chest harness maintains stability during ascent.
  • Anchor ropes: ropes fitted with carabiners.
  • Descenders or ascenders: crucial for preventing falls.
  • Helmet: ideally with built-in lighting.
  • Carbide lamp: though becoming obsolete due to LED adoption, they're useful for heat generation.
  • Haul bag or kitbag: before choosing, consider what you'll typically carry. Be mindful of handles as excess straps may snag on rocks.
