The Cat's Cave is one of Andalusia's most significant caves, attracting numerous speleologists each year. Its name derives from the entrance's resemblance to a cat, and it was already visited during the Paleolithic era, with prehistoric men leaving cave paintings behind.

If you seek strong emotions and have advanced caving skills, we recommend exploring this cave where you'll encounter the underground Gaduares River. However, curious visitors to The Cat's Cave will only see the limestone entrance. Why? The reason is simple: there's signage prohibiting unauthorised access. Though there's no physical barrier or enforcement personnel, given its danger, it's advisable not to approach too closely.

Entrance to the Cueva del Gato

The cave is accessible via a well-maintained path where you can enjoy scenic views and relax before reaching your destination. Inside, you might discover a natural pool - but only the brave dare take a dip... the water is freezing!

The cave belongs to the Hundidero-Gato Speleological System and can be divided into four sections:

  • Hundidero Cave and Bullring: This section has the steepest gradient, featuring remarkable formations like the Frying Pan Lake, Americans' Pothole, and two flooded potholes (White Lake and Black Lake). The gallery presents various challenging formations that require proper preparation.
  • Bullpens Chamber and Bottle Gallery: You'll encounter one of the longest lakes and pass the Great Stalagmite (considered one of the world's largest speleothems).
  • Boredom Gallery: A kilometre-long stretch without notable features, but the best is yet to come.
  • Lake 1,100 to Cat's Cave: The river has deposited sand in the Dunes Chamber, and various galleries will challenge your problem-solving skills. River-carried stone blocks make navigating the passages particularly difficult.

 Río Gaduares, inside the cave

The cat's mouth entrance stands about 40 metres high and is truly spectacular. Here, the Gaduares River waters emerge and cascade into one of the clearest and coldest pools - Charco Frío (Cold Pool). Enjoy an exhilarating day with friends or family experiencing thrilling adventure sports.

Don't hesitate to visit The Cat's Cave - if you're an experienced caver, you'll thoroughly enjoy your exploration. Check our caving directory to find the best professionals to guide your visit.
