• Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole: These towns - which make up an urban conurbation - are hemmed in on three sides by water. The River Stour separates Christchurch from the suburb of Tuckton, and is a great place to go paddling down to Christchurch Harbour. Bournemouth beach is long, sandy and a favourite among visitors. If the crowds get too much for you, you can’t do better than escaping onto the water on a paddleboard. There are no official regulations on paddleboarding in the UK, so whether or not someone can get involved is down to the equipment. The standard size for boards and paddles is quite big, which means children can struggle to use them.While there are some SUP lessons in Dorset that cater to children as young as 6 years old, businesses that hire equipment out might not have anything suitable for youngsters. Another factor to consider is that in a lesson you’ll be provided with a lifejacket, but you won’t necessarily be given one if you’re renting, so we strongly recommend that you only go paddle boarding if you know how to swim. You don’t need anything special to enjoy this sport here. It’s pretty similar to surfing: you need your swimming costume and any of the optional extras that you judge necessary for the time of year. We’re talking about wetsuits, hats, sunscreen, t-shirts, etc. One of the advantages of SUP is that you can use your hands while out on the water, so you can bring a camera or a phone with you to capture some awesome photos and videos of your adventure - but please put it in a waterproof case and wear it around your neck! You can also bring a bottle of water or something similar, so long as you take any waste back to shore with you.
