It is a commonly quoted fact that there are four times as many sheep than people in Wales. While this figure is difficult to prove, it demonstrates something that is undeniable: the human population occupies a very small share of the landscape, with the rest being rural or, in large parts, wild and deserted. Most people live in South Wales, in and around the cities of Cardiff and Swansea, and don’t penetrate into the National Parks of the interior, or around the wild coastlines on the West. Horses, on the other hand, do.

The same farms that look after the millions of sheep are also home to majestic horses, waiting to carry you and other visitors into the beauty of the Welsh countryside. On top of that, the vast uninhabited spaces of the country are home to herds of wild ponies, which have made their home in the rugged mountains for hundreds of years. You can discover the land of these magnificent creatures, the beaches along the coastlines, or simply the stables and their surroundings from the saddle of a horse, and we’re going to tell you about the different experiences you can have.

Where are the best places to go horseback riding in Wales?

• South: The coastal plain and inland valleys from Newport and Cardiff to Swansea is the most urban part of the country, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t ample opportunities for an equestrian escape. Highlights include a “unicorn” stables near Cardiff where children can dress the horses up in fantasy costumes before climbing on their backs to try riding, horseback trekking along sandy beaches on the Bridgend coast, and exploring the Gower Peninsula Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty just outside Swansea. • Southwest: Further West, the counties of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire are more rural, with a range of horse riding experiences. Trekking can take you along the beaches or coastal hills of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, or through rural countryside. Or for a more spiritual experience, you can book in for horse therapy, and build a powerful connection with one of these inspiring animals.

• Brecon Beacons: Boasting mountainous peaks, valleys, waterfalls and lakes, the Brecon Beacons National Park is one of the most popular places for outdoor activities in Wales. Hacking, lessons and children’s activities are available here, but the real draw of the Beacons is trekking. You can take a half-day or full-day trek and see the local area, or get to know this spectacular landscape on horseback with multi-day trekking, staying the nights in country inns and farmhouses while bonding with your horse and enjoying the views during the days.

• Mid Area: This country narrows in the centre as the sea to the West and the English border to the East encroach on either side. The Rheidol Valley around Aberystwyth on the coast is a charming place to take your first steps on a horse or go hacking if you’re an experienced rider. The interior of mid Area is sparsely populated and offers peaceful riding to all.

• Snowdonia: Outside of Scotland, the highest mountains in the UK are found in the Snowdonia National Park in the north. You’ll also find some of the best riding and horse trekking routes in this stunning part of the world. Miles of traffic-free bridleways can lead you to the slopes of Snowdon (Wales’ highest mountain at 1,090m) and Cadair Idris, or down the Barmouth Estuary to the wild beaches. Snowdonia is home to over 200 wild ponies, they’re very shy so you’ll be lucky to see them, but your best chance is from the saddle of a horse.

• Anglesey: The largest island, Anglesey lies off the Northwest coast. Coastal trails offer great horseback riding, with views back to the mountains of Snowdonia, or out to sea. This island has a long association with druids and mysticism so you can expect to feel a special connection to the scenery around you, and the horse that carries you.

• North: The counties of Denbighshire and Flintshire, sometimes called the Gateway to Wales, are great places to go horse riding, without having to travel to the extremities of the country. You can bring your child and their friends here for a pony party, or go riding down to the long sandy beaches and feel the sea breeze in your face.

What kind of experiences can you find?

- In Wales you’re sure to find the horse and the activity for you. Many children have an instinctive love for horses and ponies and they can get to know these gentle beasts in a variety of ways here. Many stables organise activity days that will include some riding, as well as bonding exercises and some more playful activities such as decorating the horses. Don’t worry - Welsh animals are known for their calm temperament and are fantastic around children. Lead rein classes or rides are a brilliant option for your child to get a taste of horse riding. They’ll get up into the saddle of a pony and go for a short 30 minute ride, with an instructor leading the way and making sure everyone’s safe at all times.

- If you’re an adult who has never ridden a horse before, there are opportunities for you too. Short rides, anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes with a group and instructor will give you a taste of the equestrian way of life, and many of these will start with a training session in the stable grounds. On the other hand, there are longer or more challenging rides in locations around Wales if you’re experienced in the saddle and want to see some of the most beautiful landscapes. If you go on a half-day or full-day trek, you’ll see a lot of scenery and forge a close bond with your steed. A shorter hack, usually an hour or two, is usually a more energetic experience, involving cantering and tougher terrain.

- For those with a passion for horses and horse riding, we recommend a multi-day trek. Take 2, 3, 4 or 5 days out of your normal life and go on an adventure into the wild area, overnighting in small rural accommodation and eating a picnic on the hoof, you’ll feel like you’re in a mediaeval fantasy land.

Requirements to do this activity

Horse riding experiences here are open to all the family! Even 4 year olds can have a go, with activity days or short rides, in some stables. As children grow up, they can take part in longer equestrian experiences, including the longest rides. There are no upper age limits.

A certain level of fitness and experience is required for some horse rides. A long trek through the country might involve covering 20 miles and you need to be confident and comfortable in the saddle for six hours or more - especially if you’re going to be doing it for several days in a row. Hacking is reserved for experienced riders, as this is an activity for the horse to get some exercise. You need to be able to control the horse well, canter, and handle uneven or steep paths in order to go on a hack.
