Rappel over the sea

Are you ready to take the plunge and buy your own abseiling gear but unsure which one best suits your needs? This is a more common dilemma than you might think, as unless you’re a regular practitioner, equipment is often shared with the sports technician guiding your rock descent.

It’s crucial to note that the gear used for climbing differs from that used for abseiling. Not all sources highlight this, but climbing ropes are entirely distinct from what we need for abseiling.

Any expert will emphasise the importance of distinguishing between static and dynamic ropes, the latter being more common in climbing. For abseiling, a static rope is generally recommended due to its rigidity, providing greater precision during descents—though both types can technically be used.

This last point comes with a caveat: your rope must align with your specific conditions (humidity, length, etc.). However, if your abseiling typically involves descending climbing routes, dynamic climbing ropes may occasionally suffice.

The main drawback of using a dynamic rope for abseiling is the difficulty in calculating the exact length needed, often leading to tangles. Thus, it’s best avoided for this purpose.

The wisest approach is to consult a specialist retailer or ask directly at one of the abseiling centres in your area whether they supply equipment. Here, you’ll find abseiling experts who can advise on purchasing the right gear or simply join them for an impromptu adventure whenever you’re ready to test yourself.
