What is it?
Heliskiing involves ascending to high peaks by helicopter (as these summits would otherwise be inaccessible), where you'll be dropped off to begin your descent through untouched snow at high speed. Impressive! In other words, it's essentially off-piste "freeride" skiing.

Its history dates back over 40 years in Canada, the benchmark country for this sport, and has since spread worldwide to countries like Switzerland, Iceland, Chile and New Zealand. Like all high-mountain sports, this activity naturally involves certain risks (avalanche danger, impassable slopes) but the guides accompanying you will constantly monitor your safety and that of the group, making it a relatively "safe" sport.
Not all descents are high-level - intermediate-advanced skiers can also enjoy easier routes.
Where can you practise in Spain?
Those unfamiliar with this sport often think it's only for the wealthy - WRONG! That said, we should warn it's not a cheap activity, but absolutely worth it. If you're a competent skier, check out where you can try it in our country.
In the Pyrenees, right in the Valle de Aran, one provider is Pyrinees Heliski offering various packages in Baqueira for group descents with friends (with a dedicated helicopter) or joining other enthusiasts for at least two descents. Prices vary depending on the package selected.

Other locations include Panticosa and Formigal, or the Mesella area in Girona where you can also experience heliskiing.
Crucially, you'll always be accompanied by an experienced guide who ensures skiers' safety and designates suitable descent areas.
Key considerations
- Risks exist. As mentioned earlier. The danger primarily arises when ignoring safety rules set by instructors. They safeguard all participants against avalanche risks or accidents.
- You don't jump from the helicopter. Many imagine skiers leaping from the helicopter with skis on. This is completely false - the helicopter lands securely on the summit for disembarkation.
- Try it once, you'll be hooked. The sensation of skiing off-piste on pristine white powder is a must-try experience at least once in your life. But we'll say it loud and clear - TRY IT ONCE, YOU'LL WANT MORE!
