There are approximately 117 in our country. Now that good weather is on the horizon, a recommended and peaceful option is to explore these spectacular outdoor trails. A great choice is a good hike, so before you start, here are these hiking tips.
Over 2,000 kilometres of greenways spread across the national landscape. They’re ideal for activities like walking, cycling, or even horseback riding. Do you know them all?
The Bear Trail (Asturias)
Likely one of the most famous greenways in Spain and the best-known in Asturias. Built on the path of an old mining railway, it stretches approximately 36 km. It crosses the municipalities of Quirós, Santo Adriano, Proaza, and Teverga. Perfect for families with children due to its gentle gradient.

This route, almost entirely green, has two additional highlights: Paca and Tola, two brown bears living in a four-hectare enclosed area at the foot of the trail.
There are two distinct routes, both starting from Tuñón.
- Section 1: Tuñón - Cueva Huerta (approx. 30 km)
- Section 2: Tuñón - Ricabo (approx. 29 km)

Ojos Negros (Castellón - Valencia)
At 160 kilometres, this is the longest greenway in Spain. For this reason, it’s divided into two sections. The recommended stretch links the provinces of Castellón and Valencia, covering about 67 km. It’s named after the old "Ojos Negros" (Black Eyes) mine, where the trail’s km 0 marker is located.

You can enjoy this route from Barracas (Castellón) to Algimia de Alfara in Valencia. Highlights include Sagunto (though it requires a slight detour) and the Salto de la Novia waterfall.

Sierra de la Demanda (Burgos)
This 52-kilometre route connects Arlanzón with Monterrubio de la Demanda, following the path of a 19th-century mining railway. It’s well-signposted, though some sections may require cyclists to dismount. Still, it’s suitable for all ages and families, with enviable flora and fauna.

Nearby, you’ll find the Atapuerca archaeological site, just a few kilometres from Arlanzón. Absolutely breathtaking!

For us, these are Spain’s three most spectacular greenways, thanks to their wildlife, landscapes, and accessibility. Though as mentioned, there are over 100 more across the country. Which ones have you tried? Which do you know?
