Five mountaineering equipment brands have announced potential safety issues this year with some of their via ferrata kits, particularly those featuring retractable lanyards.

The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) strongly advises all owners of such equipment to verify their gear on the manufacturers' websites.

 Caution with via ferrata equipment

Following an accident on 5th August, the manufacturer conducted an investigation to identify potential issues arising from intensive use of the equipment. This isn't about raising alarms due to product recalls, but rather about providing the highest quality service to customers who purchased these products. This speaks volumes about the after-sales service of major brands and their commitment to customer care.

After the UIAA Safety Commission meeting in Switzerland on 6th September, the following conclusions were reached:

  • Check your equipment. Owners of these products should visit their manufacturer's website to verify everything is in order.
  • Review UIAA 128. This aims to include fatigue testing in via ferrata safety standards.
  • Willingness to collaborate. Manufacturers attending the Safety Commission included Petzl, DMM, Climbing Technology, Beal, Camp Cassin, Lanex, Simond, Mammut, Eldelrid, Grivel, AustriAlpin and Skylotec.

Below is information about specific retractable lanyard energy absorbers requiring attention:

Eldelrid. Testing revealed that with intensive use, the elastic lanyard webbing doesn't meet relevant safety standards.

Singing Rock models EASY GO XP, EASY GO XP LOCK, EASY GO XP COMPLETE. These absorbers have been withdrawn from the market as a precautionary measure.

Wild Country. Under intensive use in certain conditions, the elastic cord may not meet acceptable breaking strength requirements.

 Will Country kit

AustriAlpin. Long-term load testing showed non-compliance with requirements. Continued use of previously recalled sling sets is recommended. All models will be re-examined as a safety precaution.

Edelweiss EVO UPSILON model. Continuous use reduces the elastic strap's resistance, making it unsafe in fall scenarios. Customers should return this product to their retailer and exchange it for the previous model.
