As if that weren't enough, the Fontainebleau Forest possesses extraordinary charm! Its stunning beauty has inspired countless poets, painters and writers. Needless to say, climbing here is an absolute pleasure.
Climbers love it so much they've even given it a nickname: Bleau!

Who can climb in Fontainebleau?
Absolutely everyone! From children to adults, beginners to experienced climbers, there's something for all. If you've never climbed before and want to try it here, consider booking with a local climbing company that offers guided sessions!
The difficulty levels accommodate all abilities. Specially designed climbing circuits feature groups of boulders at similar difficulty levels that you can tackle in sequence.
Difficulty levels are indicated by coloured markings on the boulders and corresponding abbreviations:
- White (E): Children - literally child's play that will delight youngsters
- Beige (F): Easy
- Yellow (PD): Slightly Difficult - perfect for beginners
- Orange or green (AD): Fairly Difficult - for climbers looking to improve
- Blue (D): Difficult - blue routes are for experienced climbers
- Red (TD): Very Difficult - the challenge increases exponentially. Not recommended for inexperienced climbers
- Black (ED): Extremely Difficult - reserved for specialists or elite athletes.

What equipment do I need?
Truth be told... you don't need much. No ropes or specialised equipment required. For serious climbing, even at beginner level, climbing shoes are highly recommended (though not mandatory), along with a mat to wipe your feet before climbing. This will be much more comfortable and help you feel the rock properly beneath your feet to avoid unfortunate slips.
A crash pad shouldn't be overlooked if you climb regularly. Even though the boulders aren't high, repeated falls can damage your vertebrae.
Of course, for experienced climbers, chalk and/or magnesium powder are essential.
Where should beginners go?
The forest is divided into 4 areas containing different climbing sites:
- Northern area
- Forêt Domaniale des Trois Pignons area
- Forêt Domaniale de Fontainebleau area
- Southern area

The Forêt Domaniale des Trois Pignons features several yellow circuits perfect for beginners, with sites like Cul de Chien or Diplodocus!
If you're unsure, you can hire professional climbing guides from the Paris region to enjoy your adventure with proper supervision.
