First of all, know that rock climbing is accessible to everyone. If you’re keen to start, you don’t need six years of weight training to feel comfortable on the walls. In rock climbing, technique is just as (if not more) important as physical strength. So if you’ve always thought climbing wasn’t for you, think again.

Practice climbing as a beginner

The only non-negotiable requirement for rock climbing is having the right gear. For obvious safety reasons, you’ll need complete, certified equipment.

But don’t panic. Getting started with climbing gear is easy, as most of what you’ll need is provided by clubs. Here’s where rock climbing reveals a bonus perk: it’s not expensive to take up!

Joining a club is also essential for safe practice, both for equipment and personal safety. You’ll learn critical roping and belaying techniques to stay secure while climbing.

Whether indoors (climbing walls) or outdoors (crags, boulders...), here’s what you’ll typically be provided with:

  • Harness
Climbing is usually a two-person activity. Yes, it’s a team sport! The team consists of a climber and a belayer. Both will wear a harness—an essential safety device.

  • Chalk Bag
The chalk bag holds magnesium carbonate (that white powder you dust on your hands to avoid slipping on rock).

  • Ropes and Carabiners
Naturally. Note there are different rope types (single, double, etc.) and carabiners (screwgate, non-screwgate...). The centre will lend you gear suited to your climb!
  • Quickdraws
Two non-screwgate carabiners connected by a sling, used to link the rope to anchor points on the crag. Vital for the lead climber on high walls!

 Molders

One item centres rarely provide is climbing shoes. Buy these at any specialist shop. They’re essential for outdoor routes, preventing slips on holds. Key tip for first-time buyers: they should feel snug but not painful.

 Sports and entertaining activity

As you progress and if climbing becomes a passion, you can invest in your own gear. Eventually, you’ll tackle legendary crags and routes independently!

Don’t hesitate to contact a local centre and give climbing a go! It’s a fantastic workout for body and mind, reconnecting you with nature’s grandeur.
