10 things to do in Álava

In the majority of the cities in the Basque country, you will find an infinity of possibilities of all type of activities. Álava offers proposals based in its leafy and lush woodlands, wine culture or in the natural value of unique places in Europe… So you don’t miss any of them, take a look at these 10 plans:

1. Visit the La Rioja Alavesa wineries:



Be part of a guided tour in which you will discover places designed to the wine production that exist from several centuries. Learning the history of its stocks, broths and dishes, you will find all very delicious when you taste them.

2. Explore the city of Vitoria with a treasure hunt:



Stroll through the city like a detective with an orienteering gymkhana with which you can put into test your abilities to read a map. Whilst you explore in how you will surpass the tests and challenges, you will move through the most emblematic buildings.

3. Contemplate the Aitzkomendi dolmens by horse:



Travel to the neolithic era with an equestrian route that will take you to incredible megaliths that have survived the course of time. Adding to this one, the major in Euskadi, you will see the Sorginetxe, one more curious than the last one. To reach these places, you will ride horse throughout the surroundings of the Eguílaz village.

4. Go canoeing through the Ebro:



Cross the river with more in the country by paddling peacefully in the Briñas. Pass through bridges and shores that are completely surrounded by trees, just forming sights that will get you far away from the rest of the world. If there is nice temperature, bring your swimsuit and make s top to swim.

5. Overfly Llanada Alavesa with a hot air balloon:



The vineyards not only can be seen by walking, it can also from the heights. By choosing one of these flights, you will have the opportunity of reaching the Aizorri National Park, starting from the Estíbaliz Reservoir.

6. Look for mushrooms through Vitoria during Spring:



Mycological hiking is something that you can only carry out one or two times a year, but is interesting and very entertaining to stay attentive to the calendar. You will learn which species are poisonous and which you can take and cook them fresh in a pan.

7. Enter the caves of the Sierra of Entzia:



Enter the undergrounds with an introduction to caving/speleology in the Iguarán cave. Anyone with the age of 8 and up can do it, and will the opportunity of touching and feeling the textures of the formations on the rocks until reaching the magnifical arch.

8. Look the Urkullu Swamp from a paraglide:



If you already love what you see by foot in each corner of this city, just imagine how it can be to do it but with a new perspective that will be only given when paragliding. The waters of the Urkullu reservoir and the outlines of the Sierra of Cantabria will be under your feet.

9. Descend a ravine inside a cave in Altzania:



The Leze ravine will be your favorite adventure and, yes, is true that you will need experience, is one of the most important plans to carry out in Álava because there is no other like this one in the peninsule, nor in a great part of the Continent.

10. Jump from the Santelices bridge:



It is also a great idea for those who doesn’t get scared with anything, if you dare, you will jump over the viaduct located at 25 meters in the river. Even though is location is in the limits of Burgos, is the most extreme option you have next to Álava.
