What are the best spots to swim with whale sharks in Quintana Roo?

• Holbox Island: Located in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, this island, besides being a paradise, also offers you the opportunity to have an experience with the famous whale shark. Here you will find different options that will allow you to board a yacht or boat from the pier or directly from the beach to go to Cabo Catoche, where we will find the greatest concentration of these species. The tours you can choose from range from 45 to 120 minutes, depending on the number of people who visit.

• Contoy Island: Continuing with the islands, this is one more that adds to this magnificent experience with some of the largest marine creatures. To reach Contoy Island, you will find departures from Cancun or Isla Mujeres. The boats usually anchor on the island's reef to prepare and jump with the equipment already in place and thus share a few minutes next to the largest fish. Despite being a shark, this species does not harm anyone and has great nobility, so you don't have to be afraid of being only a few metres away from it. Just respect their space and the direction given by the instructors.

• Cancun or Playa del Carmen: These cities are the most popular choice of tourists to visit and we assume one of the places where you choose to stay during your trip. You won't have to travel to another island to have the best experiences because, in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, you will find a thousand and one possibilities to enjoy. You will only have to consider whether you want to go on a shared boat or book it privately, depending on your budget. You will also have to decide the duration of this adventure because if you have limited time, you can opt for the 2 or 4-hour trips, and if, on the contrary, you want to dedicate a day to this experience with the whale shark, some companies will offer you tours for a full day with breakfast and lunch included, and of course the transportation.

• Isla Mujeres: This is the most popular island for snorkelling with whale sharks, thanks to the reefs that surround it and the abundance of these aquatic animals. You can even combine the boat tour with a stay at the various beach clubs. This will allow you to know more about the sharks and what makes this part of the Caribbean unique. The time you will have to swim with the whale shark can be around an hour and a half, depending on the weather conditions.

Without a doubt, we recommend you choose this experience as it will be unforgettable and will allow you to get to know an amazing underwater world. Make a note of the fact that whale sharks are not usually found in Caribbean waters all year round. So try to organise your trip between May and September, which are the months in which they normally reach Mexican waters. It is also an ideal adventure if you are travelling with children because this type of swim is suitable for children above 4 years.

So make no excuse and choose the destination in Quintana Roo where you want to enjoy this experience and just let yourself be carried away to this world of the giants of the ocean.
