This fortress is located next to the Pena Palace, located at an altitude of 450 meters and 210 meters above Sintra.
Its history begins in the 8th and 9th centuries, built by the Arabs to protect and guard the roads from Sintra to Lisbon, Cascais and Mafra. Later it was conquered by the Christians and the first king of Portugal (Dom Afonso Henriquea) converted it into his residence, leaving its Romanesque gates for eternity.
It has five towers, but the most important is the Royal Tower with 500 steps that you will have to climb to get to it. Once you enter the interior of the castle, you will see a chapel that was built on the old medieval necropolis. You will also see a collection of relics from the Bronze Age and the Iron Age that will allow you to discover how they lived in ancient times.
