Tips if you are going to do Caving in Mexico

If you have an adventurous soul and like to explore new and different places, then caving is for you. Discover an activity that consists of exploring the caves and subway cavities of the earth with the offers that you will find throughout the country. Sometimes, caving expeditions require other disciplines such as hiking, rappelling or climbing so you must be prepared to live a real and extreme adventure.

1. Discover fascinating places underneath the earth



Caving, also known as speleology or spelunking, will take you to discover places that you cannot imagine. You will visit caves, cenotes and subway rivers, each one with special magic and full of mysteries and surprises. You will be surprised by the beauty you will find in these places when you see their columns and walls of stalactites, stalagmites, and other natural formations that have existed in these places for thousands of years. In some sections of the tour, the light of your helmet and your flashlight will be your great allies since you will be in complete darkness, which gives the expedition that touch of adventure even more.

3. What do I need for my caving expedition?



It is recommended that you wear waterproof clothing or even neoprene suits, since you must take into account that the places to be explored can be cold, humid and if there is water, it will also get quite cold if you need to swim. What is very important is that you wear rigid shoes with laces, preferably of the mountain boot type, to protect your feet from the rocks and other natural formations that you will encounter on the way. But be prepared to get wet and dirty. The necessary protective equipment will be provided on the tour you choose, unless you are instructed otherwise. It consists of a safety helmet with a headlight, a flashlight, a compass, a map of the area and the necessary material for rappelling and climbing. We recommend that you carry a small backpack to store some objects such as water and non-perishable food and another tip is to always carry an emergency whistle per person.

4. Good physical condition is required



Caving can be considered an extreme sport as it requires specific skills and abilities and has a certain level of risk. In addition, remember that some expeditions will require activities such as rappelling or climbing that also require good physical condition. Another requirement of this sport is that you cannot leave the group at any time and that you always follow the recommendations and safety measures that the instructor indicates. It is important to know the level of difficulty of the expedition you are signing up for. Generally, each tour indicates this, but if not, check it out when you make your reservation.

5. Respect the environment



You will visit natural settings that we must all take care of and help to preserve. Do not touch the natural formations such as stalactites or stalagmites, unless the instructor says so, since the damage is irreparable and, bear in mind that they have managed to remain intact for thousands or even millions of years. Do not extract any pieces or rocks from caves or subway rivers, everything is part of an ecosystem and has a function. On the other hand, if you are going to use sunblock, it is very important that it is biodegradable so as not to damage the flora and fauna of the places to be explored. We trust that if you go on this kind of expedition it is because you like the contact with nature and discover its magic in the interior of the earth, therefore, you are also interested in its care and conservation.

When can you go on a caving expedition?



The most important thing is to choose the destination you want. The season of the year is not a problem for practicing this sport since we will be isolated from the cold and heat inside the caves. However, you have to be aware of the rainy season since it is not advisable to do your expedition under those conditions. In case it rains on the day of your experience, your instructor will indicate if it is possible to continue with the expedition or it will be better to reschedule it for another date.
