The adventure sports sector is broader than we might imagine, with summer being the perfect time to practise them while escaping the high temperatures. A few weeks ago, I talked about the most extreme water sports you can find, and here I’ll give you some ideas for water activities for all audiences.

Water Sports for the More Laid-Back

We’ll start with options for those who aren’t fans of intense thrills and prefer a fun afternoon with family or their partner without needing a huge adrenaline rush.

  • Canoeing. A pleasant paddle on a reservoir or a river with calm waters might be the most suitable option for those who prefer a gentler pace. These are also very family-friendly boats, where up to three people can go, and children can handle them or just relax without any issues.

  • Boat trip. It’s not a sport per se, but it is an ideal water-based leisure activity to unwind from daily chores. You can also combine this with choosing a spot where you can spot cetaceans, like in Tarifa or A Coruña. It’ll be truly special.

Water Sports for River Enthusiasts

Some people crave a bit of excitement in their lives and see river canyons or rapids as the perfect way to escape their routine, get an adrenaline kick, and enjoy an adventure with their loved ones.

  • Canyoning. Undoubtedly perfect for an adrenaline boost between jumps, dips in natural pools, and sliding down natural chutes. Depending on the river, some canyons will be steeper and higher than others, so you can go with friends or even young children—though if you’re experienced, nothing beats tackling a more challenging river.

  • River SUP. Paddleboarding adapted to rivers, where you can ride rapids (best in late spring or early summer when the water flows stronger, making it more fun). If you love trying new things and ditching typical plans, this could be the perfect alternative.

Water Sports for Sea Lovers

Beaches aren’t just for sunbathing and flipping over on your towel—they’re also the perfect place for activities that’ll remind you summer is about fun, not being a bore by the shore :)

  • Surfing. The perfect way to discover a new hobby and a whole new life philosophy—one that helps you see everything from a fresh perspective. You’ll meet fun, wholesome people, and when you catch your first wave, it’ll be a feeling you’ll never forget...

  • Jet skis. If you’re with friends, this could be a great way to have some fun. You can use them in a closed circuit or go on guided tours to explore different coves in your summer destination. A unique way to sightsee and have a blast.

Other Aquatic Alternatives

Here are more equally thrilling options, perfect for adventurers like you, hungry for new experiences.

  • Flyboarding. More and more of our coastlines now offer this activity, where you ascend, fly, and perform unique manoeuvres. Jump on the trend and don’t miss the chance to fly like a superhero. The instructor operates a jet ski and gives you all the necessary guidance to succeed.

  • Windsurfing. Learn to sail while controlling the board and harnessing the wind. An instructor will teach you the basics—how wind works, its effect on your board, how to set up and dismantle your gear, and even how to get back up if the wind knocks you down. Fun guaranteed.

  • Wakeboarding. Riding a board while being towed by a speedboat might just spark a new passion. You can do it at sea or in a reservoir, so wherever you live, there’s likely a spot to "get your fix"—because you’ll definitely get hooked!
