Today, it is considered a high-risk land-based sport as it requires specific technical knowledge and specialised equipment, such as that used in rappelling or technical exploration like in the extraordinary Cave of the Crystals.
The famous cave
The Cave of the Crystals was discovered by accident in the year 2000. It is located in the Naica mine area, a mining town dedicated to silver and zinc extraction, and primarily a lead producer in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.

The topographical features of this cave include being 300 metres deep, with temperatures reaching up to 50°C in some areas and 100% humidity. Under these conditions, human life is entirely impossible without assistance, yet they have given rise to the formation of breathtaking selenite crystals. Inside this cave, a human could not survive for more than two hours without specialised equipment such as respirators and body-cooling suits.
Selenite is a type of hydrated calcium sulphate mineral that, under the cave’s conditions, has formed giant crystals up to 10 metres long and between 1 and 2 metres in diameter. This makes it one of the most awe-inspiring caves in the world, as selenite crystals of this size had never been recorded before.

This splendid natural setting boasts extraordinary beauty thanks to the shimmer and unique transparency of its enormous crystals. Absurdly and surrealistically, the cave’s scorching temperature contrasts with the ice-like appearance of the crystals.

Can you visit the Cave of the Crystals?
Yes! Part of Naica can be visited without needing to be an expert caver or scientist. Due to the extreme climatic conditions of this unique place, entry into the cave is restricted to a limited audience based on health and age.

To visit this astonishing site, the company conducting the tours enforces strict conditions that must be followed to the letter, as any mistake or mishap could cost lives. Non-compliance with these safety rules will result in access being denied without exception.
Bear in mind that within the visitor area of Naica, temperatures reach 46°C with 90% humidity, meaning your body will feel an equivalent temperature of 54°C. For this reason, given the extreme conditions, each visit lasts a maximum of 10 minutes to prevent dehydration. It’s strongly advised to hydrate thoroughly before the excursion.

These are the requirements for accessing Naica:
- All visitors will undergo a medical examination by the tour company. The results will determine if the individual is fit to enter the cave. Pregnant women, people with hypertension, and diabetics are excluded.
- For safety, only those aged between 16 (minimum) and 65 (maximum) are permitted entry. The company makes no exceptions.
- Appropriate attire includes a t-shirt, long trousers, and industrial or flat shoes. Shorts, sandals, vests, or short trousers are not allowed. The company provides the remaining specialised equipment. Bring an extra t-shirt to change into after exiting due to excessive sweating.
- Access groups are limited to 2 people maximum, accompanied by one or two professional guides.
- Visitors may only enter the cave’s entrance, not beyond the concrete flooring. Views are permitted from "El Mirador" (the viewpoint) only.
- It is forbidden to touch, scratch, or take samples of the crystals. Smoking, littering, or photography inside the cave is also prohibited.
Now you’re ready to explore this fabulous and unique place that Mexico proudly hosts. Magically, you’ll gaze upon these colossal translucent crystals and embark on a thrilling journey to the centre of the Earth. Cheers! A bit of heat to witness such a sight is absolutely worth it!
