Location and Features
Located 56 kilometres from Ciudad Valles and just 11 kilometres from the town of Aquismón, this deep cave attracts many enthusiasts. You’ll find it precisely in the community of Tamapatz, in the Barrio de Unión de Guadalupe. This site draws ornithologists, geologists, hydrologists, archaeologists, paleontologists, cavers, tourists, and adventure sports practitioners who come to observe, admire, study, and explore this magnificent pit.
This natural abyss was discovered in 1976 when two ornithologists were studying birds in this region of the Huasteca. Dave Whitacre and Devi Ukrain stumbled upon the spectacular refuge of various local bird species.
This cliff cave presents a surface opening of 60 metres in diameter, widening with depth to reach 300 metres in diameter at its base. It is a reverse-cone-shaped cave formed by water erosion on limestone rock.
The Cave of Swallows boasts a depth of 512 metres, with 376 metres of sheer vertical drop. To put this into perspective, the Eiffel Tower in Paris stands at 324 metres tall—meaning this cave could easily accommodate it.
