Summer is fast approaching, and with it comes the holidays. You may have considered trying some adventure activities to spice up your stay. Scuba diving is one of the holidaymakers' favourite activities, taking advantage of their free time to immerse themselves and enjoy the tranquillity and weightlessness offered by the seas and oceans surrounding France.

You'll find all the companies offering water sports activities on our portal! But if you're looking for something truly unique, you could try your hand at underwater photography.

Turtle underwater

Some companies offer underwater photography taster sessions through practical and theoretical courses that will teach you the basics of this leisure activity.

Is it right for me?

Underwater photography is aimed at anyone who has already tried scuba diving. Handling a camera while focusing on shots requires good mastery of safety procedures and self-sufficiency underwater. A Level 2 certification is highly recommended for immersion photography.

That said, you don't need to be an expert for an introductory session with professionals who'll guide you and teach you how to handle the equipment.

Discovery of underwater fauna and photographing it

Sessions of freediving underwater photography, or snorkelling with fins, mask and snorkel are also available. Everyone brings their holiday photos home to share with loved ones or revisit occasionally.

Underwater photography will let you return home with the most beautiful memories - perfect for lifting your spirits when you're back to reality!

What equipment will I need?

Some companies provide the equipment. Don't hesitate to contact the centre beforehand to confirm they have underwater photography rental gear available.

 Underwater diving to take photos

For enthusiasts wanting to progress further and practise underwater photography regularly, investing in your own equipment is advisable. You'll need:
  • Of course, a digital camera to be purchased alongside a waterproof housing. Not all cameras have compatible housings, which is why it's important to buy both together following professional advice. Given the price, it's best not to make a mistake when purchasing. The housing can also be replaced with a more economical waterproof case, allowing you to dive up to 50 metres without issues.

  • A wide-angle lens: This will compensate for the water's "magnifying glass" effect on your images!

  • Lighting equipment: Flashes, spotlights and torches are available to restore natural colours to your photos. The flash will be useful in deep waters, while a torch or simple colour filter provides basic equipment sufficient for your first underwater shots.
This equipment is expensive, and it may take time to assemble a complete kit if you don't have the budget to buy everything at once.

Capturing images of this aquatic world - so different from our own - is an enchanting experience. Enter a realm where creatures from the infinitely small to the infinitely large coexist. Does this tempt you?
