Whether freediving or through diving courses, come and discover the Maldives as you’ve never seen them before...

The Republic of the Maldives comprises 1,200 islands, only 200 of which are inhabited. But the true beauty lies beneath the sea. However, the region’s strong currents demand rigorous and methodical planning for all your marine excursions.

The splendid sets of the Maldives

1,200 small coral islands nestled in the heart of the Indian Ocean, southeast of India... A permanent postcard-perfect setting!

In February 2006, we decided to explore this fabulous dive site ourselves, uncovering the countless treasures of these Indian jewels...

Our first surprise came upon arrival at Malé Atoll. Far from a deserted island, we landed on densely populated, highly urbanised land. Malé is home to 80,000 people (out of 280,000 across the archipelago), and the island—the republic’s capital—is entirely urbanised!

 Fabulous diving site

Adjacent to Malé lies Hulhule: the airport island. Beyond this international airport, the archipelago has four domestic airports. Travel between islands is mostly via dhonis (traditional boats). For longer distances, you’ll need a seaplane or light aircraft.

In the Maldives, navigation around islands is relatively easy: lagoons have calm waters, and winds are rare. However, crossing between islands reveals the ocean’s raw power and unpredictability.

While fishing has long been the Maldives’ primary trade, tourism is now its second-largest industry and top foreign currency earner.

Indeed, diving has driven the archipelago’s growth for years. Today, nearly all resorts, hotels, and campsites offer diving or snorkelling. Excursions abound, with most resorts operating private dhonis to ferry guests to prime dive sites. It’s a thriving industry, gaining new devotees yearly!

 Meeting with local fauna

Beyond recreation, diving also funds vital conservation efforts for local marine life.
Every iconic coral reef fish is here... A festival of colours and fins... From sharks to the famed clownfish...

But the star attraction remains the manta rays... In shallow waters, you’ll witness majestic Manta birostris being cleaned by tiny fish. Observing these extraordinary marine creatures is a must for every diver—a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For us, their graceful freedom epitomised this unforgettable Discovery of the depths of Maldivian waters
