In this early 21st century, we sometimes think everything has been discovered and invented in the realm of sports and leisure. The options are vast, yet they often feel more or less the same. What do you think?
Well, think again! Just as the most pessimistic among us claim "there’s nothing new left to try," along come adventure sports to deliver fresh thrills—and perhaps your next passion!?!
For instance, if surfing already symbolises adrenaline and excitement for some, imagine what it’d be like to ride the waves at night...

But why surf at night when beaches are among the most pleasant and welcoming places by day? In darkness, surfing transforms into a completely different experience... How, for example, do you time the perfect wave?
Typically, the worst moment for surfers comes at dusk when they must leave the water. To avoid this "end-of-day trauma" and keep enjoying the thrill, some beaches—like Bakio in Spain’s Basque Country—use artificial lighting to help surfers navigate the darkness...
Others take it further: armed with just a headlamp or a board-mounted spotlight, they charge into the waves. However, this activity isn’t without risks. Two critical factors must be considered:
- Your skill level: Beginners shouldn’t attempt this—full board control and expert wave-reading are essential. Safety first!
- Darkness: Even with a headlamp or board light, visibility remains limited. Surfers must stay 120% focused throughout the session. Avoid night surfing when fatigued!
Recently, Mark Visser broke the world record for night surfing by tackling an 11-metre wave! During his session, a helicopter with artificial lights illuminated the water’s surface for him.

Where did this epic adventure unfold? Where else but Maui (Hawaii)—home to the world’s best waves, according to many riders.
Fancy it? If you’re an experienced surfer seeking new challenges, why not try this extraordinary experience with professionals at one of France’s many surf centres?
