Below, we suggest some routes that can be enjoyed as a family, either through hiking or snowshoeing excursions.
ENJOY SIERRA NORTE WITH THE CHILDREN
1. Schmidt Route
A well-known path among mountaineers, traversed annually by hundreds due to its low difficulty, making it suitable for children. It starts at Navacerrada Pass and reaches Cercedilla, passing through places like Fuenfría.

Once at Navacerrada, you'll see a paved path to the left at the top of the pass, marked for this route. The entire trail is signposted with yellow markings on trees, making it perfect for staying on track. This route can be done in both winter and summer.
2. Cotos Pass: Pingarrón Refuge
Ideal for snowshoeing, as the route is easy and suitable for all ages, including children and school groups. The path is lined with pine trees and spans about 2.5 km round trip. The route starts at the pass car park and ascends towards the road linking Navacerrada and La Pinilla.

Then, follow the RP-6 Circular Hoya del Toril route, continuing straight ahead. The landscapes here will be fully snow-covered in season. The refuge is well-marked, and the view from there is spectacular.
3. Bandit's Cork Oak Route
Perfect for little ones, as it’s only 4 km long with a 200 m elevation gain. The route starts in Manzanares el Real and heads towards La Pedriza, where children can run safely in open meadows.
Begin on Calle del Tranco, follow the river up to Avenida Pedriza, then turn left to El Tranco car park. Climb about 20 metres until a path appears on the right—follow it straight to reach the famous tree. Legend says a bandit hid treasure here that remains unfound.
4. Water Trail
This well-known trail leads to Laguna del Salmoral from the village of Prádena del Rincón. The lagoon collects mountain water for nearby crops and features a birdwatching hide.

The guided route requires a group of 10, but it’s worth it as children learn about freshwater cycles and conservation. Highlights include spotting aquatic birds, amphibians, reptiles, and riverside vegetation. Kids will love it!
5. Navacerrada Pass – 7 Peaks
This snowshoeing excursion is straightforward but covers 10 km, so it’s best for children aged 10-12 accustomed to walking.

The effort pays off: head towards Alto del Telégrafo and follow the ridge straight to the 7 Peaks summit, offering views of Madrid and Segovia. Return via the Schmidt Route mentioned earlier—a perfect activity for a perfect day out.
