The first thing you need to fly is to keep your feet on the ground, paradoxical as it may seem. Nowadays, the romance of those classic aircraft flown by daring aviators with peculiar goggles, scarves fluttering in the wind, and their iconic jackets (still fashionable today) has given way to professionalism and technology, ensuring safety for both students and those seeking their first experience. At Aeroclub Llanera, specialising in private pilot training, they've been guiding people through this process since the early 90s because an experience in the skies is a serious matter – one you'll enjoy like a child.

Now then: what do you want to do? If you're wondering whether you can choose, the answer is a resounding yes. This team of instructors, based at La Morgal Aerodrome in Lugo de Llanera, offers all possibilities. You can have your first aerial contact with a short flight in the light aircraft or step into the often-mentioned role of "pilot for a day". Thinking big – why not train to become the pilot yourself? If you can't think of a good reason not to, then your future lies in aviation, and Aeroclub will take you there. By the way, whichever option you choose, don't forget to look down. This is Asturias, where the landscapes between sea and mountains are spectacular.

A baptism in the skies

What we love most about this adventure is that it's "no sooner said than done". A flight baptism can be done whenever you fancy kicking monotony to the curb or if you're about to despair over your father's birthday or that anniversary they've admitted they don't want you to forget this time. Calling it the perfect gift would be an understatement. It consists of a flight led by one of the aeroclub's pilots for half an hour or a full 60 minutes where you can admire Asturias' beaches and lush meadows.

Usually, you or the guest of honour would go up alone with the instructor, but at Aeroclub Llanera, you can finally share this special moment as they offer one to three seats for the same flight. Would you really want to miss seeing the look on your loved one's face while you wait on the runway?

Today, you're the pilot

And all you need is to be at least 13 years old with your parents' permission. The "Pilot for a Day" flights are one of this flight centre's most exciting offerings. Leave your day job at home because you'll be stepping into a professional pilot's shoes from the start, ultimately taking control of the aircraft. You'll be welcomed at the aeroclub for a theory session covering flight fundamentals. This might sound serious, but it's actually a fascinating introduction to concepts you'd normally never encounter – like why and how planes fly, how controls work, and meteorology's role.

All this takes just 45 minutes. Then, inside the aircraft, another hour awaits where you'll try for yourself how to climb, execute turns, and begin descent. Your emotions will undoubtedly be running high as you feel responsible for these achievements, but rest assured – the instructor maintains constant control of the aircraft.

A more extended version of your preliminary pilot training are the introductory flight courses. At Aeroclub, these consist of 3 sessions with 60 minutes of flight time, diving deeper into everything you need to know about flying.

Want to become a private pilot?

You've fallen headfirst into aviation's allure and now only think about going professional, haven't you? Since Aeroclub Llanera knows this happens, they're ready to provide what you need. You should know the qualification is called PPL(A) – initially cryptic initials that make perfect sense as they stand for "Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane)".

You don't even need to wait until adulthood. You can start at 17 after passing the medical examination they'll inform you about. A 100-hour theoretical course takes just around 4 months of in-person classes. Putting what you learn into practice requires 45 thrilling hours in the aircraft, fully personalised and adapted to your schedule from Monday to Saturday.

Your flight has already begun – you just need to take the next step with Aeroclub Llanera.
