Most companies offering paintball will require a minimum number of players to ensure the game runs smoothly and is more fun. Typically, you’ll need to form a group of 6 to 8 people as a minimum.
Once you’ve gathered your paintball team, head to a paintball field. Here, an instructor will provide all the gear: a mask to protect your face, a marker to shoot paintballs, and a vest to avoid staining your clothes. Depending on the game type, you might also need knee pads, neck or torso protectors, or camouflage gear.
What paintball game modes exist?
If you’re unsure which paintball game to choose, know there are different modes—from capturing the enemy’s flag before they do, eliminating all rivals, or scoring points in a hockey-like version.
The most common variants are:
- Speedball: A fast-paced game with smaller teams (typically 3 players, though more are allowed). Instinct and quick reflexes are key, as paint marks reveal when you’re hit by the opposing team.
- Woodsball: Games last longer here—played in wooded areas where players can hide in foliage. Larger teams reduce the chance of early elimination.

- Extreme: A full survival experience lasting up to 48 hours in open terrain. You’ll carry gear and supplies, but with no referee, responsibility falls entirely on players.
- Mode 10: Two teams of 5 compete to eliminate opponents as quickly as possible. Matches wrap up in minutes, prioritising speed over strategy.
- Scenarioball: Follows a scripted theme, with games lasting hours or days. Open to all skill levels, as the storyline dictates each player’s role.
You might have heard of other paintball variants—many fields create their own versions. Alternatives include laser tag, airsoft, or Nerf battles.
