Scuba diving is one of the most regulated sports out there. Practising it not only requires knowledge but also involves monitoring aspects related to your health to ensure every underwater dive, whether it's a discovery dive or a more comprehensive diving course that involves descending to greater depths.

Current Diving Regulations

The current diving regulations establish specific safety rules for all types of diving (recreational, professional, scientific...) except military. As expected, recreational diving is also governed by these rules, so every diver must sign a liability waiver regarding their health status.

This questionnaire determines whether you meet the health requirements to dive. However, if you're undertaking a specific course like the Open Water Diver, a second confirmation from a hyperbaric physician—a specialist in diving physics and its effects on human physiology during dives—is recommended. Thus, an expert's opinion always adds an extra layer of safety for diving.

Especially if you're certifying for a more advanced diving course like the Advanced Open Water or the Nitrox specialty, a medical check-up is essential to assess lung pressure, ear health, blood pressure... even your dental health! Only if you're deemed "fit" can you safely undertake the diving course you're specialising in.

What Does a Diving Medical Certificate Include?

This document certifies that you're in perfect condition to dive into underwater depths safely. You'll need to book an appointment with your GP or a doctor specialised in hyperbaric medicine, as they’re best qualified to examine you. The certificate consists of two parts:

  • Medical History. Here, you’ll complete a questionnaire with your personal details, height, weight, eye and hair colour... You’ll also find a list of potential medical conditions, such as: frequent headaches, use of glasses or contact lenses, asthma, frequent or severe colds, motion sickness, allergies, high blood pressure, smoking, heart conditions, pregnancy... If any apply, you must tick and explain why.

  • Medical Examination. This second part must be completed by the doctor, who will verify everything is in order. The most important factor for underwater activities is being healthy, both physically and mentally. Diving exposes you to unfamiliar conditions, such as changes in breathing air pressure, ambient pressure shifts, stress, fatigue... So, it’s crucial to ensure you’re prepared to handle these effects.
Though obvious, the doctor must pay special attention to any history of fainting (however mild), ear or sinus issues, signs of high stress or emotional instability, and—of course—problems related to illegal drug or alcohol use.

How Long Are Diving Medical Certificates Valid?

According to the Royal Decree published in the BOE on 2nd June 2020, diving certificates are valid for 2 years, though an annual medical check-up is recommended.
