We've launched a new category on our portal as Yumping.com grows day by day thanks to you, who inform us about the most popular adventure sports, like gliding. So those who practise it will know what we're talking about, but if you haven't had the pleasure of trying it yet, here are some explanations.

Gliding is an air sport that allows you to pilot a glider using only air currents. Germany was its country of origin and remains one of the places where it's most practised today.

Enjoy gliding

One interesting aspect of this activity is that the aircraft will always descend, so you must always consider that the highest slope with upward air currents will be the ideal spot to let yourself be carried. There are different types depending on what you're looking for, such as slope soaring, mountain wave flying or even thermal currents. It's just a matter of choosing what best suits your preferences.

Taking a gliding course can be very interesting, especially considering that anyone with common sense can try it. You'll need to be cautious, of course, and very precise - while not extremely dangerous, we don't want you taking unnecessary risks. Hiring a good instructor is the best decision you can make, and you'll usually be able to fly in a two-seater glider for your first experience.

This activity lets you enjoy incredible bird's-eye views where everything looks smaller and you'll discover you didn't know your city as well as you thought - an experience that's truly priceless. Another option is to take a holiday, visit an unknown place and try some active tourism, away from typical excursions and rush.

Discover a new way to fly

Before boarding the aircraft, the pilot will brief you on all important details, whether related to the sport itself, weather conditions, equipment or piloting.  You can try an introductory flight - the advantage of flying in a two-seater aircraft is that you'll sit in the front seat to better enjoy the views and feel inspired to learn to fly.

Takeoff is achieved with the help of a tow plane that pulls you to a suitable altitude for gliding, typically for at least 30 minutes (depending on conditions and the company you fly with). Wear season-appropriate clothing and don't forget to bring a camera to immortalise your experience.

Taking a gliding course is within your reach, and easier than you might think. You have these options:

  • Glider Pilot Course. With theoretical and practical lessons, you'll obtain this licence to rent an aircraft and relax while flying like a bird. To complete the course you'll also need to perform dual-control flights.
  • Advanced Training Course. You'll learn various thermal and distance flying techniques, potentially earning the FAI Silver or Gold Badge depending on whether you take the basic or advanced course.
  • Safety and Unusual Attitudes Course. You'll master the glider in any position but must meet requirements including holding a gliding licence and having flown at least 50 hours as pilot-in-command.
  • Instructor Course. If what you really want is to teach future pilots, you can obtain this qualification provided you hold a gliding licence and the FAI Silver C Badge, plus have completed over 100 flight hours and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
