We know choosing an adventure sport is a big challenge, especially if you're not a natural athlete and have reached a point in your life where you fancy trying something new. "What if I tried climbing?" you wonder. But... how do you actually climb? Don't worry, it's easier than it looks. We'll give you some guidelines here!
Even if you don't know it yet, there's an adventurous spirit inside you that we're going to help awaken. How would you like to reach a spot with incredible views where you feel like king of the world? To reach the highest peaks - even if they're just local ones - the sport you need is climbing.
"I've chosen climbing but what now?"
The first thing you need to do is gather information about this sport to familiarise yourself, even just basically, with the terminology, techniques, equipment...
Once you've done your research, it's time to take a climbing course. Choosing a company near your local area is a good option to start with, as you'll get to know your local surroundings more deeply and might be surprised to see familiar landscapes from a completely new perspective.
There's no need to worry though, because anyone who sets their mind to it can climb. Remember that since ancient times, humans have climbed mountains in search of food to survive. Nowadays it's a way to escape daily routine and has even become a profession for many athletes.
A good company with qualified professionals is your best option, as there's nothing better than learning from specialised instructors who'll teach you everything you need to know for this adventure. First you'll need to know what type of climbing you'll be doing, as there are several styles: sport climbing, bouldering, free climbing... Once you've decided, you just need to go for it.
What types of climbing courses are available?
- Beginner's course: covers basic progression techniques and safety that will allow you to climb independently, both in climbing gyms and natural climbing areas. You'll learn about the equipment and how to use it, plus relevant safety techniques.
- Advanced course: focuses on improving climbing techniques, strategies, dynamic belaying, overhangs, equipment retrieval, movement techniques...
During the course you'll learn under the supervision of professionals, either in a climbing gym or outdoors, and most schools will provide or rent you the necessary equipment.

Once you've completed courses suited to your level, you'll see that climbing is easier than you first thought. Plus, you'll go on several group outings to practise what you've learned in class, making it much easier to become a great climber - or at least to give it your best shot. Best of luck!
