One of the milestones for any self-respecting mountaineer is the moment they ask themselves "do I need to get a federation licence or not?". This is when one starts asking fellow enthusiasts and begins hearing arguments for and against. But ultimately, it's you who must decide what works best for you...

How to federate in the mountains

Here we'll discuss the benefits of having a federation licence and how to complete this process. Feel free to share your opinion in the comments!

Benefits of having a federation licence

  • The most important aspect is the peace of mind knowing that you'll have insurance coverage for risks you may encounter in the mountains: accidents, rescue operations or even repatriation if you're in another country.
  • It includes civil liability insurance.

  • It gives you access to special discounts at certain shops and mountain huts, not just in Spain but across Europe thanks to reciprocal agreements.
  • If you want to join organised trips with clubs or are considering taking courses, they'll likely require it.
  • You can participate in all activities organised by the FEDME (Spanish Mountain Sports Federation).
  • Your interests as a mountaineer will be represented by the FEDME.

Federation of mountain sports

How can you get a mountain sports federation licence?

It's very simple! First, you should know that while you can register directly through the Federation, if you want more benefits, you can join a mountain sports club. Where can you find one nearby? Your regional Federation will have all the information you need, not just about different clubs but also about what's included (and not included) in the insurance. Plus, registering through a club will be cheaper (you'll get at least a €25 discount).

This year, FEDME and other mountain federations have partnered with Zurich insurance company to process licences. Moreover, each federation has coordinated with them to adapt the policies to their specific types of licences.
