20th October 2010. The World Surfing Championship has just begun in Ericeira, Portugal, with Vigo native Gony Zubizarreta arriving in peak form. Last week, he stood on the podium at the Volcom Duck Fish competition held on 16th-17th October at Patos Beach in Vigo. Joining Gony in success was Ferrol's Yoli Rodríguez - from Team Movistar - who claimed victory in the Groms category (under 14s), proving both Galician athletes are in fine form to continue their season.

Meanwhile, Gony Zubizarreta, already in Ericeira, has cleared his first heat with a score of 12.83 points, putting him in first position ahead of Australian Stephen Wals, who also advanced but in second place with 10.83 points. Portuguese surfer Leonardo Belime and Brazil's Andre Texeira were eliminated in this heat.

After competing, Gony commented: "We're mid-season now and I'm feeling really comfortable having made it through. The entire championship lies ahead - we need to take it slowly, heat by heat, not just aiming for the podium but to keep accumulating points in the overall rankings."

Gony and Yoli, Team Movistar's surfers, continue working hard in waters across the globe to raise their boards to the highest level.
