It’s normal to find yourself staring in awe at the beach, watching surfers dance on the waves in perfect harmony—but as (almost) always, it’s a matter of practice. A great way to start is with a very similar board that will deliver nearly the same results as surfing... bodyboarding!
Bodyboarding is another water sport where you glide across the water on a board, called a bodyboard, similar to a surfboard but not identical, as its shape is flatter and smaller.
Don’t assume mastering bodyboarding in sync with the waves is much easier, though—it requires technique and consistency to ride the waves this way. However, it’s a perfect way to learn how to surf, especially if you’re starting from scratch, with waves suited to your level and a bodyboard.
While it’s true that surfboards allow you to ride more powerful waves, with bodyboarding—where you lie down and rarely stand up—you can catch shorter, steeper waves. It’s common to hear surfers downplay bodyboarding, but we guarantee this practice will still get your adrenaline pumping.
Getting started in this sport is as simple as heading to any surf school—plenty of which you’ll find across our peninsula. Here, you can explore options for learning bodyboarding in an easy and, above all, fun way. As you may know, some of the best surf centres, thanks to their favourable coastal climates, are in northern Spain, the beaches of Cádiz, or Tenerife.
No matter where you want to start, bodyboarding will have you catching gorgeous waves in no time, turning you into a true surf expert.
