Most back injuries are due to our behaviour, both in daily life and when practising adventure tourism. We should consider some recommendations to enjoy life without any type of injury.

From an evolutionary perspective, we were designed to walk "on all fours". When our ancestors adopted an upright posture six million years ago, the consequences included, for example, better vision (they could see a more distant horizon, better gauge the size of things relative to their own dimensions, etc.), and our forelimbs (arms and hands) could specialise in tasks beyond support and defence. But there were also detrimental consequences for the spine, which from then on would have to bear the weight of most of the body.

Take the necessary precautions

Therefore, we must consider our back as one of the "jewels" that needs the most care among all the "treasures" our body contains. Learning techniques to protect our back, such as lifting very heavy objects without straining it, is - obviously - much more beneficial than undergoing multiple treatments after we've already been injured.

When it comes to lifting heavy objects, the solution is simple, though getting used to it is another matter. Generally, our habit is to do precisely the opposite; when we bend down to lift a heavy object, we do so by bending our spine when in fact it's our legs and arms that should be doing the work.

When we drop something on the floor, like a pen or keys, how do we pick it up? By bending our back. We never bend our knees. Every time we do this - and it's many times - we're mistreating our spine. In fact, most common back injuries result from incorrect lifting of objects. In short, we must get used to (it's not easy) "lowering" with our legs; no matter how flexible we think we are, if we've "bent down" using our back, it's not the same to reverse the movement with added weight.

 Learn to lift heavy objects

It's important to learn how to lift very heavy objects. You should consult a specialist and then get used to doing it in "day-to-day" life, which is the hardest part. Reinforcement and maintenance exercises are always helpful. Consult your doctor or a reputable specialist.

Likewise, when practising adventure sports like snowboarding, we must bear in mind that during turns or falls, our back might suffer some mishap. Taking necessary precautions is what will save us from potential uncomfortable injuries.
