Looking to unwind with some adventure sports? In that case, we recommend preparing properly to enjoy your experience to the fullest while staying safe!
For some, these may seem obvious, but not everything is so straightforward - sometimes the smallest detail can catch you out! And nobody wants to ruin a day of relaxation! Equipment, clothing, accessories and gear are the main elements to consider. If you're looking to join a hiking trip, here are 5 essential tips:
- Equipment: You'll need comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement, plus properly fitted footwear suitable for your feet that enables you to tackle all types of terrain in complete comfort. Additionally, your outfit should be season- and destination-appropriate. For example, when mountain hiking even in midsummer, it's always advisable to pack a waterproof jacket as weather changes rapidly at altitude!
- First Aid Kit: This very lightweight essential should include: hydrogen peroxide, plasters, bandages, medical tape, aspirin, antivenom... A blister treated promptly can soon be forgotten!

- Accessories: Sunglasses and a hat are essential for hiking in sunshine. A torch will prevent panic if nightfall catches you out. Small details can save your day!
- Mobile Phone: Your constant companion - check it's fully charged before leaving home, as it keeps you connected at all times. If hiking alone, we recommend informing family or friends of your route and estimated return time. Ultimately, it's preferable to always walk in groups, particularly on challenging routes: you'll benefit from both camaraderie and safety.
- Food and Drink: Pack some energy snacks (bananas, energy bars...) and plenty of water (at least two litres) to prevent sudden hunger pangs or dehydration.
While hiking may seem like an activity suitable for everyone without requiring special equipment, it's still important to follow some basic rules regarding trip preparation and on-trail safety. As the saying goes, "prevention is better than cure", right?
