If you're both an adventure enthusiast and love motor sports, 4×4 driving is certainly an activity you've considered.

Unfortunately for enthusiasts, 4×4 vehicles have gained a poor reputation among environmentalists, and sometimes among local residents who must contend with noise and litter left on trails.

Yet experienced off-road 4×4 drivers are generally responsible practitioners. This responsibility involves promoting a positive image of 4×4 enthusiasts, countering the destructive stereotype sometimes associated with these magnificent vehicles and their drivers.

4x4 off-road

Indeed! Off-road enthusiasts are typically nature lovers, constantly seeking new ways to enjoy their hobby while respecting wildlife, flora, and others.

The following rules aren't meant to be preachy but stem from common sense. Still, it's worth reviewing and reminding ourselves occasionally:

1 - Only drive on existing tracks and trails, avoiding cutting across fields or venturing onto non-existent paths that could damage already fragile ecosystems.

2 - Drive slowly whenever possible: it's advisable to stay below 40 km/h, and go even slower on dry roads to prevent dust clouds.

3 - Pedestrians, cyclists and other sportspeople always have right of way. Don't hesitate to come to a complete stop when necessary. The goal is to facilitate everyone's movement with respect and courtesy. A friendly "hello" never hurts when trying to promote a positive image of off-road 4×4 drivers.

4 - Leave trails as you found them! Take your litter with you or use the nearest bins. If you spot any pollutants along the way, picking them up would be appreciated. Never throw anything from your windows - including cigarette butts.

5 - Avoid lighting fires, especially during hot months, to prevent wildfire risks.

6 - Mind the noise: When stationary, remember to turn off your engine. During your off-road 4×4 adventure, avoid unnecessary honking or loud music. Nature's sounds often make the best soundtrack. Your engine shouldn't be louder than a new vehicle's.

7 - Maintain your 4×4 properly: Ensure no fluid leaks occur, leaving no trace of your passage. Check that your exhaust doesn't emit excessive smoke.

8 - Whenever possible, avoid driving through watercourses. If there's a bridge or alternative route nearby, use it instead.

9 - While 4×4 driving is often a group activity, especially among friends, try to avoid large convoys. If participating in numbers, split into smaller groups.
