10 things to do in La Gomera

La Gomera is the perfect example of that say that declares that the best things come inside small jars. Even though occupies the second position between the smallest islands of the Canary, it can still offer everything. In less than 400 km2, it concentrates dense woodlands, full of exotic vegetation, truly black volcanic terrains and small villages that are the envy of any touristic photoshoot. Explore this island with these 10 plans we propose to you:

1. Hiking through the Garajonay National Park:



The island conserves a unique ecosystem that has been present for millions of years, the laurel forest. Its trees and ferns intertwine their branches under the mist enveloping the small roads in a fantasy story environment. So much so that it has earned the nickname of Enchanted Forest and is part of the World Heritage. Being lost, intentionally, between these paths is a pleasure for the senses.

2. A cultural route by a bus throughout La Gomera:



Book a circular route to meet and explore the island, paying attention to their heritage in terms of culture and gastronomy. You will start at the viewpoint of El Palmarejo, designed by César Manrique, continuing to El Cercado to visit an artisanal pottery workshop. You will also visit the Island Interpretation Center to learn how to identify the most valuable points of this part of the Canary Islands.

3. Watch whales and dolphins from Gran Rey Valley:



In the western part of the island, you have the possibility of boarding a boat and carry out an expedition that will take you to find cetaceans that live in the waters of the Atlantic. It is common for you to cross with different varieties of dolphins, the most common are the mules and mottles. There are also sperm whales in the area, because they use these routes to move and, like them, you can take a dip in a cove when the boat stops to anchor.

4. Reach the Chipude Fortress:



Inside the municipality of Vallehermoso, you can ascend and reach also known as the Argodey Fortress, old indigenous name. It is a curious natural monument that presides over the Natural Park of the Ravines of La Rajita as if it were a dome sculpted by the geological evolution of the island. The adventure on foot will take you around half a day and will also serve to contemplate the wide palm groves that support the local economy.

5. Motorboat trip through the Santiago Beach:



Next to its port, you will find small boats to rent, that doesn’t even require any type of degree to sail. That way, you can go in your own pace to some of the virgin beaches, of the surroundings that the owners will recommend before leaving. In the El Cabrito, you will find 450 meters of the black sand coast and calm waters, while in the Middle is nudism allowed if you dare.

6. Visit the plantain cultivation of the Costa Norte:



In Hermiga, you will find the perfect climate for the plantation of the most famous Canary fruit, in fact, there is no other like this one on the planet. By doing a hike, you can ascend Los Montes and contemplate the valley with ist extensions dedicated to this labor with routes that last around 4 hours, through a path of almost 300 meters. Is a small challenge for the tourist but as a reward, there are the best views and a refreshment in the stores of La Caleta.

7. Boat trip to Los Órganos:



Departing from the Vueltas port, in Valle Gran Rey, you will get surprised by this exciting volcanic formation that has become one of the most famous things about this island, known all over the world. You will see columns that were born from the magma that reaches 125 meters in height. Remember that by boat is the only way of contemplating it, from a great perspective, so don’t forget about booking your ticket.

8. Go fishing in San Sebastián of La Gomera:



Enter the Atlantic to catch the best captures from the ocean, and from the capital. Thanks to the situation of its port, we can arrange cross-country fishing trips, and catch tunas and marlin fishes, with the option of also trying the modalities of jigging and light trolling.

9. Los Roques overlooks:



These rock blocks are also from volcanic origin. Are a total of 5, located in a way that looks like are vigilant of the access to Garajonay. You can reach the first overlook by road from San Sebastián, stopping between the stones of La Laja and Agando. Its views are more spectacular during the sunrise and with the sunset, so we recommend you to choose these moments of the day.

10. Meet the birds of the Atlantic:



The sights and views of La Gomera are protected in such way, that dozens and dozens of bird species live and conserve there. Is really common to spot an osprey among the cliffs and other local varieties in the Majona Coast, among the Cedro and Liria ravines. One of the best ornithologists expeditions, you have them by boat in the area of Los Órganos.
