What a surf lesson is like
A first surf lesson starts on the sand: how to lie on the board, paddle and pop up to your feet in one movement. Then you go into waist-deep water on a soft foam board, and the instructor helps you catch the white water, the broken waves rolling towards the beach. Standing up takes a few tries, and many beginners spend their first lesson getting there. Lessons usually last two to two and a half hours, and you can choose group, private or family sessions.
The best-known surf in the UK is on the Atlantic coasts of Cornwall, Devon and Wales, with good waves in Scotland and the north-east for those who don't mind cold water. Summer has smaller, friendlier waves for beginners, while autumn brings more swell and a sea that is warmer than in spring. The wetsuit and board are provided. In many schools the instructors are qualified surf coaches and lifeguards too.

Frequently asked questions
How long is it valid?
5 years from purchase. The exact date is printed on the voucher.
What if they don't fancy surfing?
The voucher works for any other experience on Yumping.
Can it be used in several goes?
Yes. Whatever isn't spent stays in their Yumping wallet.
Do they need to be fit?
An average level of fitness is enough. Paddling is tiring, though, and you'll feel it in your arms the next day.
What if there are no waves, or too many?
The school checks the forecast and the beach before each lesson. If conditions aren't right, you agree a new date with them.
Can we have a lesson together?
Yes, group and family lessons are common. Each surfer pays for a place, so the voucher covers what it reaches and you pay the difference, or you give two vouchers.
