What a Segway session is like

A Segway is a two-wheeled platform that you steer with your body: lean forward to move, lean back to slow down, and turn with the handlebar. Every session starts with a few minutes of practice on flat ground with the instructor, until you can start, stop and turn without wobbling. Most riders feel at ease quickly. Sessions run from 20 or 30 minutes to an hour and a half, and the instructor leads the group along the route.

There are two main formats. Off-road safaris follow woodland tracks, grass and gentle slopes in country parks and estates, sometimes with an obstacle course or games and challenges at the end. Tours follow a set route through parkland, past lakes or around the grounds of a historic house. Many venues have junior sessions with their own age range, and family sessions where parents and children ride together. Tracks get muddy after rain, especially in winter, so wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty.

What you need

  • The limits are weight and height more than age: usually 45 to 117 kg (7.1 to 18.4 stone) and at least 1.34 m tall.
  • Many providers set no minimum age, others ask for 5 to 14 years depending on the session.
  • Under-18s ride with an adult, who signs the waiver for them at some venues.
  • Flat closed shoes such as trainers. Sandals, heels, skirts and dresses aren't allowed.
  • Some providers don't accept riders who are pregnant.

Frequently asked questions

How long is it valid?

5 years from purchase. The exact date is printed on the voucher.

What if they don't fancy segway?

The voucher works for any other experience on Yumping.

Can it be used in several goes?

Yes. Whatever isn't spent stays in their Yumping wallet.

Is it hard to keep your balance?

It takes a few minutes to get used to. The instructor gives a practice run on flat ground before setting off, so stopping and turning come first.

Can a parent ride with a child?

Yes, many venues run family or junior sessions. Each rider pays their place: the voucher pays for as much as it covers and they top up the rest. Two vouchers, one each, also work.

What if it pours down?

If the weather rules the session out, they agree a new date with the provider.
