That’s right, the peaceful town of Tenby is home to a quad biking facility. And not just any - this is the largest quad bike centre in the whole of Wales - enough to make you travel out to Pembrokeshire even when rain puts an end to your plans for a day at the beach, or should that be especially when it’s raining?

It’s obviously a real crowd pleaser, and that’s partly because it offers something for all members of the crowd. Beginners enjoy getting the hang of riding these machines, experts push them to their limits, and even youngsters can take part. With a site divided between a track, for speeding around in controlled conditions, and a trekking area, for putting the quads through their paces, and a range of options from cheap thrills to endurance experiences, you’re guaranteed the ride of your life here.

What kind of quad biking experiences are on offer in Tenby?

• Track rides: From the air, Tenby’s quad bike track looks like a handful of spaghetti that’s been thrown on the ground. There are twists, there are turns, and, unlike spaghetti, there’s mud! This is where you can really put pedal to the metal, or thumb to the throttle, and see if you can reach the top speed, which could be over 40 miles an hour. It’s not just for daredevils and petrolheads though, this is the place where children are allowed to ride a quad. Without uneven terrain, obstacles and large puddles, it’s a safe option for the little ones, and they’ll have special small bikes too. You can book a quick spin around the circuit which lasts 15 minutes, or a 30 minute thrill.

• Trail rides: Riding around the track is all well and good, but quad bikes are ATVs, which stands for All Terrain Vehicles. So if you want to experience what were designed for, you should choose a trekking experience around a whopping 12 kilometre trail. The route takes you through forests, up steep slopes, and across fields, sometimes following a path, and other times ploughing your own furrow. To tackle the different conditions, you’ll have to adapt your driving style and pull off some cool manoeuvres, and you’ll leave the site as a much more competent rider than you were when you arrived. Completing the circuit takes 35 or 45 minutes, and every minute is packed full of thrills.

• The machines themselves: You’re going to find a whole fleet of modern quad bikes in Tenby, and you’ll be assigned to the most powerful model that’s suitable for your size and weight. The smallest ones are 50cc Yamaha models, which pack a punch despite their size. Next, there are two intermediate models manufactured by Suzuki - LT-A50 LT-Z90 - before getting to the big beasts - 125cc Yamaha Breeze models and 150cc Kymco MXU bikes. All of these bikes feature automatic transmission, which means that you don’t need to have passed your driving test to use them effectively, and you can focus on the fun!

Who can ride a quad bike in Tenby?

You know those different quads we just mentioned? Well they give riders of all shapes and sizes the opportunity to burn some rubber and send some mud flying in Tenby’s quad biking facility. The age of each visitor is used as a guideline. In general, the minimum age for quad biking here is just 6 years old. From this age to 8 years old, it’s the 50cc Yamahas and Suzuki Lt-A50s that are most suitable. After that, bigger kids can get on Suzuki LT-Z90s, which have the advantage of an adjustable top speed limiter to keep the more boisterous 9-14 year olds in check. And the biggest kids, that is, teens and adults over 14 years old, can get their hands on 125cc and 150cc Yamaha and Kymco models.

It’s not just the choice of vehicle that varies with age. Track riding, with smoother surfaces, more predictable conditions, and some crash barriers is an option for riders of any age, but to have a go at the 12 kilometre trail in Tenby, all members of the group need to be over 11 years old.

The team have over 30 years of experience in the world of quad bikes, so they know how to make everyone have a great time. One of the main ways that they do this is by treating each group individually. There’s no chance of them splitting your group up, or putting strangers in your quad squad. Kids groups are catered for, with any child celebrating their 6th to 13th birthday eligible for a special treat. In general, the maximum group size is 6 riders, in the company of 2 instructors, but you can bring up to 12 people, though they might be divided into 2 teams.

What do you need to bring the day of the experience?

Bring the right attitude! This activity isn’t for wimps, and the more enthusiasm that you put in, the more fun you’ll get out. The team will give you some equipment to help you enjoy thor installations - a helmet, a set of overalls and wellington boots. These will help you rev the engine and blast through the mud with a smile on your face.

However, in the chaos of a quad bike ride, even overalls won’t protect you from every splash. That’s why you should turn up at the site in appropriate clothes. Old athletic gear or outdoor clothes are best, and you should avoid anything tight fitting. Check the weather forecast and prepare for the temperature, and consider bringing a change of clothes if it’s going to rain.
