What a go-karting session is like

A karting session starts with a safety briefing on the flags, the controls and the racing line, and then you're given a helmet and often overalls and gloves. Most sessions follow an arrive and drive format: practice laps to learn the track, then timed laps, a qualifying session or a race with a grid. On track you drive for 10 to 30 minutes, so with the briefing and kitting up expect to spend one to two hours at the venue. Many tracks give you your lap times at the end.

Indoor tracks are tight and twisty and work in any weather. Outdoor circuits are longer and faster. Junior karts have smaller engines and suit children from about 8, and some tracks run sessions just for kids. Groups can book a grand prix with heats and a final, a common choice for birthdays, stag parties and work events. In some cities there are also guided tours in road-legal karts, which work differently and ask for a full driving licence.

What you need

  • Junior karts from about 8 years old and 125 to 135 cm tall, depending on the track.
  • Adult karts are for over-16s at most tracks.
  • Some tracks set a maximum weight of around 18 stone (115 kg).
  • Under-18s need a parent's consent.
  • Road kart tours are for over-25s with a full driving licence.

Frequently asked questions

How long is it valid?

5 years from purchase. The exact date is printed on the voucher.

What if they don't fancy karting?

The voucher works for any other experience on Yumping.

Can it be used in several goes?

Yes. Whatever isn't spent stays in their Yumping wallet.

Do they need a driving licence?

Not to race on a track. Only the city tours in road-legal karts ask for one.

What if it rains?

Indoor tracks aren't affected. If an outdoor track has to close because of the weather, you agree a new date with them.

Can we race against each other?

Yes, that's the fun of it, and groups often book a race of their own. Each driver pays for a place: the voucher covers what it reaches and you add the difference, or you give two vouchers.
