What a guided hike is like

A guided hike takes you along mountain paths, ridges, coastal trails or forests with a guide who knows the route, reads the weather and the map, and explains what you're walking through: the rocks, the history of the land, the plants and the birds. Walks range from gentle half-day routes on clear paths to full mountain days of six to eight hours, climbing peaks and crossing open moorland where the path is hard to follow.

Some guided days add scrambling, using your hands on rocky sections of a ridge, and on the coast there are routes that mix walking with swimming and snorkelling. There are also navigation courses where you learn to use a map and compass. In winter the mountains call for more experience and kit, and the guide adapts the route to the conditions and to the group. Walks run all year, with the longest days and the most routes from late spring to early autumn.

What you need

  • Minimum age of 8 to 12, depending on the route, with some walks for adults only.
  • Children walk with a paying adult.
  • A reasonable level of fitness helps on mountain routes.
  • Some long mountain routes aren't recommended if you're pregnant or have a condition that affects your breathing.
