In a place like the Lake District National Park, the shortest distance between two points isn’t alway the footpath. Scrambling allows you to strike out across the landscape using a combination of hiking and rock climbing techniques.
Langdale is one of our favourite places to go for a half-day scrambling adventure, partly because of the stunning terrain and partly because it’s on the doorstep of our base in Ambleside. Having said that, we can lead groups on this kind of trip at numerous locations in the park.
Our expert adventure guides know the landscape like the back of their hand and you’ll have the exclusive attention of one of them.
The guides will also bring along climbing and safety equipment. The amount of roped climbing we do depends on the route and your preference. You’ll need a pair of good shoes or boots, layers for the cold and weather and anything else to keep you going on the mountains.

Scrambling is a kind of mountaineering that you’ll likely have done by instinct on rough terrain. It involves using your hands as well as your feet to traverse rocks and steep slopes, and can also require ropes and rock climbing techniques.
There’s plenty of opportunity to have a go at scrambling in the Lake District National Park. We can take you on an adventure up mountainsides and down gulleys, led by one of our experienced outdoor instructors. They’ll supply technical equipment and safety gear, including helmets, to keep everyone safe on routes that you might not attempt alone!
We’re based in Ambleside, so we often head into Langdale to tackle the steep sides of the valley and the approach to Scafell Pike, but we can run a scrambling trip almost anywhere in the national park. If you like, let us know where you’re staying and we’ll come to you!
For this full-day excursion, you’ll need good sturdy footwear, an approach shoe is ideal, and warm/waterproof layers, as well as snacks and drinks to keep you going.
